Assessment Policy Comparison - VCAA and IB PYP
Venn Diagram created on Creately.
There are some similarities between the PYP curriculum and VCAA curriculum across each of the domains (The Arts, English, The Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, Science) and the Physical, Personal and Social Learning strands (Civics and Citizenship, Health and Physical Education), yet the class structure in the PYP curriculum always has an overarching transdisciplinary theme and the curriculum allots time specifically for teaching the PYP learner profile, while VCAA AusVELS schools mostly teach interdisciplinary themes during Humanities, The Arts and Science and fit the learning of the school values within the rest of the curriculum. There are also some similarities between the IB learner profile and the VCAA Interdisciplinary Learning strands (Communication, Design, Creativity and Technology, Thinking Processes), and the Physical, Personal and Social Learning strands (Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning). Nonetheless, there is a noticeable difference between the two in that the PYP is built upon five essential elements and six transdisciplinary themes, as well as approaches to learning, while AusVELS simply consists of a set of prescribed content and common achievement standards.
PYP assessment involves a portfolio of work for each student per year, as well as an overarching portfolio for the student's duration at school. VCAA assessment includes the use of OnDemand testing, an online assessment resource to be used by the teacher at their own discretion.
Both VCAA and IB PYP schools sit NAPLAN testing, and both VCAA and PYP schools must give out bi-annual report cards to parents as well as offer interviews for parents to discuss their child’s progress. These reports include a graphical representation that shows achievement against the expected AusVELS during the reporting period, and a five-point scale indicating achievement against the expected standard.
